This month we are featuring Whitney Olch Bishop and how she pulled off her wedding in just three short months. This is when having a wedding planner is a must! As Whitney said about her wedding planner “I got engaged in March and married in June and Meredith Parsons pulled all of the details together.” I have to agree with Whitney; Meredith Parsons did an amazing job with getting all the vendors and details to beautifully come together. Her wedding and reception were held at the luxurious St. Regis Deer Valley. Whitney describes her experience with St. Regis, as “Katherine Johnson the wedding coordinator is AWESOME!” She also loved her DJ “Michael Antonia – BEST DJ EVER! He is based in LA.” Having an expert photographer like Pepper Nix gave Whitney memories to look back on for years to come!

Interviewer: Whitney I have to admit my favorite invitation this summer is yours! I absolutely love the design and how much it complimented the thermography. Just looking at it and the feel of the raised ink when holding it in my hands was love at first sight! Tell me about the process you went through in dreaming up your invitations. Where did you get your inspiration from and how did you decide what your invitations would look like?
Whitney: Pinterest. There are hundreds of options and ideas on Pinterest but a few that stuck out to me as inspiration piece. I also know my style and the type of wedding I was having, so I knew what my invitations needed to convey.

Interviewer: Do you feel your invitations helped you to set the tone for your wedding?
Whitney: Yes, definitely.

Interviewer: What is your favorite part of your invitations and was there any feature of your invitations that people complimented you on most?
Whitney: Hard to say, I love all of the different prints. I am also very happy with the paper I selected. I also received lots of compliments on how well done the invitations were for such a short engagement period.

Interviewer: Were there any lessons you learned through your creative process in dreaming up your invitations you’d like to share?
Whitney: Proof read and use a second set of eyes. I made a couple of mistakes on my printed pieces that my groom caught; one before it was too late and the other not, but Ann Elizabeth was able to creatively solve the issue.

Interviewer: Did you use any elements from your invitation that were incorporated into the decor at your wedding venue?
Whitney: I wanted the palette for my invitations and all of my printed items throughout the weekend to be subtle and similar to the decor at the wedding.

Interviewer: What advice would you give to brides who are looking to gather inspiration for their wedding invitations?
Whitney: Pinterest is an excellent resource and an easy way to communicate with Ann Elizabeth (or whomever designs your invitations) on what you like and don’t like. I would also tell brides not to over think details, make a decision and move on. I was engaged in March and married in June, so I didn’t have an opportunity to pick a theme or a color scheme and carry it all of the way through; I had to make decisions quickly and not in a traditional order and everything turned out perfectly.BOTM-Whitney_Olch-Bishop_group3-20

Interviewer: How was your experience coming into the studio and working with the Ann Elizabeth team?
Whitney: I was really only in the studio once and it was only for a short time, but I was able to pick my papers then and everything after that we handled via Pinterest and email.

Interviewer: Whitney it was a pleasure working with you and I’d like to thank you for taking the time to talk with me and share the details of your wedding!

Interviewer: A fun side note about Whitney is she designed her own ring and “OC Tanner executed it!” She also had the groomsmen ties and bridesmaid dresses all uniquely different like “ the different invitations pieces.” For wedding favors they did a donation to the Park City Foundation, had a candy bar and cute cloth bags for out of town guests.

This is so witty; that’s why it’s my first pick. This is sure to have your guest talking and enjoying some fun facts about the bride and groom.

My second pick is “The Story”. This couple used the back of their menu to tell the story of how they met; their journey from beginning to the day he pop the question and she said “Yes”! If your guest didn’t know all the cute facts of how you fell in love they will now. What a great personal way to share your life with your loved ones.

The Cootie Catcher:
My third pick is “The Cootie Catcher”.  This reminded me of being a kid playing with my friends to see what our fortune would be. I love this one because who wouldn't want to pick it up and start playing with it immediately. It’s a great way for young and old to be entertained!

2013 Wedding Trend: Lace

2013 Wedding Trend: Lace

We’ve seen this trend all year “Lace” and it is showing up everywhere from the clothes we wear to the decor we buy for our homes. At Ann Elizabeth we are privileged to create beautiful pieces of art thru our invitations and lace has been, and continues to be, a soft yet elegant way for our clients to express themselves on paper. We also love seeing how other vendors in the wedding industry are using lace so I thought I’d share some of my favorites.

The first invitation set is Reaback-Sutton. This is a beautiful combination where textured and metallic papers meet letterpress printing and complete the look with a lace paper overlay along with a lace band to hold the reply card giving this invitation an extra touch of elegance.

This lovely bouquet was made by Calie Rose Floral and Event Design. Their bride Mandie Maughan-Krause is featured with her bouquet in the Utah Valley Bride Magazine and was on the cover of the Spring 2013 issue. Calie Rose did an amazing job designing her bouquet taking her colors of blush, cream and light mocha then adding the soft touch of lace complementing the lace bodice of her wedding gown (purchased from Veronica Michaels). Kristina Curtis Photography really captures Mandie’s romantic vintage theme throughout her wedding and you can see more pictures from Kristina in Utah Valley Bride Magazine.

We had the pleasure of being invited to create the invitation suite for Utah Bride Blog fall editorial shoot in 2012. So I wanted to share how Ann came up with the creation of the “Leather and Lace” invitation and how last fall her inspiration was already setting the lace trend for 2013! After a couple days of brainstorming ideas Ann woke in the middle of the night with the thought of “Leather and Lace” and quickly sketched out a horse head idea with lace behind it.  When creativity hits you write it down so you can remember it later!

Using straps of leather tied around an invitation with a lace layer and a horse head monogram applied directly to leather gave this unique invitation a “balance between hard and soft elements.” Keeping the flow of the theme she added a lace envelope liner for the RSVP. Then to remind guest of the invitation she used a touch of lace, and a horse head tag tied with leather on the menu completing this invitation suite!

Congratulations Jenae Jackson-West our August Bride of the Month!

August 2013: Jenae Jackson-West!

We’d like to congratulate Jenae on her recent marriage and are excited to feature her this month as our Bride of the Month! Jenae has such a down to earth personality and it shows from her invitations to all the details that brought her dream wedding to life.

Interviewer: Now that your big day is all through, have you recuperated?
Jenae: Jason (my husband) and I moved to Texas for the summer less than a week after we got married with our honeymoon in between. It was very exciting but I still don’t know how we did it. Now that things are slowing down and we are getting into our life together I am definitely recuperating. I do have some days when I wake up in the morning and my heart is racing because I think I forgot to call the caterers, check my email, or make some appointment, so it might be a few more weeks before I can totally get the wedding planning out of my head!

Interviewer: We felt that the striking grey ink paired with the soft green you chose for your invitation was so complimentary and we especially liked the envelope wrapping. Tell me about the process you went through in dreaming up your invitations. Where did you get your inspiration from and how did you decide on what your invitations would look like?
Jenae: I knew I wanted something that people would remember, something that would catch their attention right from the start, but not because it was bold or brightly colored. I have always been a girl that loves the natural beauty of the outdoors, which is what inspired my entire wedding. With that in mind I knew for the most part the colors of ink I would want to use and what kind of paper. It was working with Ann through the design process that brought all my ideas together. Once we got down to my final three proofs, it was an easy decision because we had created exactly what I wanted.

Interviewer: What is your favorite part of your invitations?
Jenae: I loved my envelopes. I loved how it caught my guests’ attention right when they opened their mailbox. The envelopes definitely expressed the theme of my wedding before they even opened it by making a subtle statement. The way the invitation was held together with the graphite pocket envelope as well made it very fun to unwrap and unfold.

Interviewer: What feature of your invitations have the most people complimented you on and did anyone mention the unique look of your envelopes?
Jenae: Several people complimented me on how well the theme flowed through out the entire invitation. From the envelope, to the main invitation, to insert cards, the invitations really did express the garden feel of my wedding. Many guests told me that they were the prettiest invitations they had ever received. One of my guests told me that she had given the invitation to her daughter to hold on to as an example for when her little girls plan their weddings.

Interviewer: Have you taken any elements from your invitation to use throughout your wedding decor?
Jenae: Yes, my mother and I made a rosemary/peppermint lip balm as wedding favors for our wedding guests. The labels, which we placed on the tins, included the same monogram, date, and leaf design that was on the monogram cards that we had attached to the graphite pocket envelopes. I have also noticed as I look back on my invitations, that the flower image that we used throughout the invitation was very similar to the flowers and greenery I had in my bouquet as well as the other arrangements my florist put together.

Interviewer: Do you feel that your invitations set the tone for your event?
Jenae: Very much so. I feel like before people came to our wedding they had an idea as to what to except, that it would be very natural looking and have a garden feel that definitely came across in the design of my invitations.

Interviewer: What advice would you give to brides who are looking to gather inspiration for their wedding invitations?
Jenae: Look at your entire wedding as a whole. You want all of the little details and pieces of your wedding to fit together and your invitations are what your guests are going to be seeing first. Make your guests anticipate what your upcoming wedding events might be like.

Interviewer: Is there a lesson you learned through your creative process in dreaming up your invitations you’d like to share?
Jenae: Create something that you love and feel expresses you as a couple. Don’t settle for something less than what you have in mind because you think it isn’t an option or possible.

Interviewer: How was your experience with Ann Elizabeth?
Jenae: I absolutely loved working with Ann and Ruth! I remember telling my mom as we left our first consult that I wanted to work at Ann Elizabeth’s or start a business like it because it was so much fun! I had checked a couple other invitation places before I went to Ann Elizabeth and always felt restricted. As I went through all the possibilities and production process with Ann, she had a way of creating and putting together what I had envisioned. Ann and I were able to create something that not only expressed the theme of my wedding, but me and my style as well.

July 2013: Chandler Huntsman-Astin!

This month we are featuring Chandler Hutsman-Astin and her Classic Navy and Ivory invitation suite. Her simple but classic taste was shown throughout her wedding details along with her choice on using thermography that made her invitations look complete!

Interviewer: Now that your big day is all through, have you recuperated?
Chandler: Yes I have, but I can tell you one thing; one wedding is more than enough. I could never do that professionally!

Interviewer: I absolutely love how your invitations turned out they were so elegant and well put together with the layers and pocket to keep all the details organized. Tell me about the process you went through in dreaming up your invitations. Where did you get your inspiration from and how did you decide on what your invitations would look like?
Chandler: I actually went out and got a couple of bridal magazines with my Mom after I got engaged. I went through page-by-page and have a binder full of pages I tore out in search of great ideas. I had my basic idea and showed it to my Mother and my wedding planner. Between the three of us we explained what we wanted to Ann Elizabeth. After that we came up with some rough drafts and I ran everything through my husband, in-laws and parents and with everyone’s combined effort we came up with exactly what we wanted. I couldn’t have done it without the artistic design and help from Ann Elizabeth, I knew what I wanted, but I never would have been able to get there on my own.


Interviewer: What is your favorite part of your invitations?
Chandler: I think that my favorite part of my invitations was the tri-fold on the outside. I think it looked clean and crisp like I wanted, but the wrap added some romance and made it seem less harsh. (That was something recommended to me when I expressed some concern that my wedding was starting to look more like a Naval Ball than a wedding!)

Interviewer: What feature of your invitations have the most people complimented you on?
Chandler: Everyone loved the overall elegance, but I think the number one compliment we got was how everything just fit together so nicely. The layered invitations on the right made everything clear and prevented things from getting lost or cluttered.

Interviewer: Have you taken any elements from your invitation to use throughout your wedding decor?
Chandler: I actually used the lettering to inspire my seating assignments, table numbers and the monogram I had on my cake, and the chocolates I had made for my dinner guests.

Interviewer: Do you feel that your invitations set the tone for your event?
Chandler: I think when people opened the invitations they got a sense of what to expect on the day of our wedding. From the moment people opened them they realized this would be a little different from the typical wedding we see here in Utah. While those are beautiful, I am very traditional and I always pictured having a less modern style wedding that captured the old elegance that we sometimes lose. Our friends and family still comment on how the simple, clean elegance of the invitations perfectly captured the event we had.

Interviewer: What advice would you give to brides who are looking to gather inspiration for their wedding invitations?
Chandler: Have an idea of what you want, start looking through every magazine you can find, be open to new ideas and don’t be afraid to do what you want. I know my wedding was a little “old fashioned” and my invitations were “old school” but that is what we wanted and it perfectly captured our marriage.

Interviewer: Is there a lesson you learned through your creative process in dreaming up your invitations you’d like to share?
Chandler: Don’t get too caught up in one thing or another; remember the process as a whole will spit out the perfect design, one aspect will not make or break your invitation. Oh! And you can never have your invitation designed too early!

Interviewer: How was your experience with Ann Elizabeth?
Chandler: It was great! I was worried it would be hard to get my ideas across but they were able to perfectly capture what I was hoping for and the invitation they came up with was better than anything I had dreamed of.

Congratulations to Melodie Perry, May's Bride of the Month!

May 2013: Melodie Perry!

It was so fun to have Melodie as one of our brides this past fall. We actually met Melodie  through Alta Moda Bridal, where Melodie works part time, before she came to meet with us for her invitations. Melodie is a sweet bride who dreamed of her invitations resembling a Tiffany's jewelry box. You know... the iconic blue box tied with a white satin ribbon. We were excited about the prospect of developing a Tiffany's inspired invitation for Melodie's dream wedding in Chicago. Keep reading to find out more about her invitations and her romantic wedding.

Ruth: When you came to us you had an idea for your invitations to resemble a Tiffany's box. How did you come up with the idea?
Melodie: I’ve always loved anything that came in a Tiffany’s box. Alex would always get me presents from there and it was kind of our thing that if it is something really special it was in a Tiffany's box. That is how I picked the colors for my wedding by using Tiffany blue and pops of pink. I had to add the pink because it's my favorite color.

Ruth: What’s your favorite part of the invitations?
Melodie: I loved how everything fit into it’s own little pocket. When you gave me samples I remember thinking how well put together and organized it looked with a pocket.

Ruth: Was there an element like the pocket that made you think "yes, that’s it!"?
Melodie: I love that you were able to make the pocket that I wanted out of the blue shimmer paper that I wanted. That is what really sold me on it! I just love the blue color and how the pocket folded everything together like a present!

Ruth: What was your favorite part about the invitation process?
Melodie: I liked how visual the proofing method was with everything shown very clearly. I’m not the type of person who can visualize things but you made it very easy through proofs and pictures. It was also great to have physical samples of invitations and papers.

Ruth: Have you received any feedback from your guests about your invitations?
Melodie: Well, 6 months after the wedding everyone I know still has the invitation on their fridge! Even people that couldn’t make the wedding said how much they loved the invitations. Also, I’m so glad you reminded me to stamp the RSVP, I would have never thought to do that and people thought that was great.

Ruth: Did Alex participate in the proofing and decision making process with you?
Melodie: I thought he would say “whatever you want” and wouldn't be that interested in the invitations. But then when we received the Pinterest board that you created for our inspiration he had a lot of interesting feedback of what type of graphics he preferred. It was surprising to me that he wanted to be involved but it was really fun to do together.

Ruth: How was your experience working with Ann Elizabeth from start to finish?
Melodie: 
The experience definitely lived up to my expectations. I knew that I wanted to use Ann Elizabeth for my invitations because I’ve seen so many great things in magazines and in person that have come from your studio. I have friends who are getting married now and are using Ann Elizabeth for invitations and they’ve been really happy they chose you guys too! I felt really good about my decision from the start and everything was very easy.  I also really liked that you sent my proofs through email because I live 30 minutes away and I didn’t want to always been driving to the studio.

Ruth: What advice you would give brides who are going through the invitation design
Melodie: Listen to your instincts and if you’re drawn to a certain thing you don’t have to try and explain it. Just say, “I like this and it's great”. Go with your instincts and you’ll always be happy in the end! I think mainly don’t be afraid to ask questions and any ideas you have just throw them out there. Also give yourself plenty of time and make sure you proofread, even have others proofread it as well so everything is correct.

Ruth: Were there elements of the invitation that were carried throughout the wedding?
Melodie: The Tiffany blue color went all through the wedding. Also, my menu designer in Chicago was able to match the colors of the menu up to the colors of the invitations. The colors were also used for the flowers and we used ribbon to tie around the centerpieces keeping the Tiffany's box theme.

Ruth: Was there a special reason you chose to be married at the Trump Towers in Chicago?
Melodie: We loved how Trump Towers had both a view of the cityscape and how it overlooked the Chicago River. Plus the people at Trump Towers are super nice to work with! Also, Alex’s family is from Chicago so we thought it would be fun to have our wedding there. With me working in the wedding industry in Utah I felt like having my wedding in Chicago was like having a destination wedding.

Ruth: Do you have any advice for brides planning a destination wedding?
Melodie: Hire a wedding planner that is local to the area you're getting married in because they have a lot more experience with the vendors. I think anyone can make things look great on a website so I was really grateful for our planner who gave me honest feedback and we loved ever vendors she recommended so it was a great relationship!

Ruth: Tell me a little about your actual wedding day.
Melodie: Well,  honestly I was very tired of planning by the time my wedding came. I hear brides say “I had so much fun planning my wedding” but that wasn’t necessarily me. I was a little overwhelmed at time. I'm sure that there were so many little details that I could have just said "whatever" and it would be fine but I didn’t want to do that. Instead I kept working at getting all the little things done. I got the “must have” shot list to the photographer and sent the DJ my preferred song list. I felt really glad I put in the extra effort to do all those little things because I think they did really did make a difference. When the actual day came I woke up that morning and knew everything was going to be great! The only thing that went wrong on my wedding day was that I tried to steam my wedding dress myself and burned my arm. So I guess that would be another suggestion to new brides “don’t steam your wedding dress yourself! ”

Save the Date Part 2: Destination Weddings

If you're planning a destination wedding here are some do’s and don’ts to help you prepare. Traditionally a destination wedding is focused on a smaller group of close family and friends therefore sending a save the date is a MUST! Especially if you are planning to wed over a holiday where guest will need to plan accordingly. Etiquette time frames for sending out your save the date on a destination wedding should be six months to a year depending on location. When planning make sure you have the date, venue and URL locked in before sending them out. This gives your guest an idea of what to start planning for as far as travel goes. When creating your save the date card you can use elements of design from your wedding theme which can be carried throughout your invitation suite giving your guest a fun teaser of what's to come.

A save the date should have the date, destination, invitation to follow and a URL. Keep it simple by the way of wording and have fun with the design to get guest excited about the big day.

What details should not be on a save the date?
Do not give too much detail on a save the date card. For example: ceremony details and activities that will be going on during the occasion. You don't want the save the date to be confused with the invitation.

Why is it so important to have a URL?
With a URL you can provide contact information for travel agents/services and hotels so guests can handle their own travel and lodging. It also can be a place of information about your destination and activities so guest can pack appropriately. You can remind guests of passport, visa and other legal requirements and safety concerns if traveling to a foreign country. The URL can be so convenient for continuous updates and important information throughout the months to come.[/one-half]blog quote 2

If you have a whole weekend planned you can say “Save the Weekend”. With a weekend full of activities and events you will need an itinerary with details that your guests can take with them so things stay organized. Your itinerary should be incorporated into your invitation and again this is where you can get really creative and use your destination for inspiration.

With helpful do’s and don’ts you can create a well organized destination wedding that you and your guest will have memories to enjoy for a lifetime!

Congratulations to Michelle McDonald-Ross, November's Bride of the Month!

November 2012: Michelle McDonald-Ross!

We are so pleased to be sharing Michelle's invitations with you. Michelle came to us with an awesome pinterest board flushed out with lots of inspiration. As we sat down with Michelle and talked about the items she had gathered for inspiration we were able to get a feel for Michelle's laid back attitude and easy-going style. By the end of a very productive consultation the scope of her invitations started to come into focus with a size and shape selected, a color palette nailed down and we figured out the different pieces she would need.

Michelle wanted a chevron pattern as well as an autumn branch, tree or leaf to be incorporated into the design. It was a unique combination and we knew we had our work cut our for us.

Our invitation consultant Ruth Sorenson sat down with Michelle to get her take on the process. Here are the highlights from our interview!

The Interview:

Ruth:  One of my favorite things about your invitations was that you challenged us to create an invitation set that had contemporary elements combined with nature elements, what made you decide on those two elements?

Michelle:  I was kind of nervous before meeting with Ann Elizabeth because I knew how I wanted the invitations to feel and I was thinking "how am I going to make these guys understand what I want based on a feeling?" I knew I didn’t want rustic and I didn’t want cold. I was also concerned because people can have different ideas of what natural and modern look like and I wasn’t sure how to explain what I envisioned. It was really good to sit down at the consultation and just rap it out. There really was no specific design in mind when we started; just a vague aloof description of what I wanted them to FEEL like. Letting me talk about what I wanted the invitations to feel like and looking at colors and papers led me to those two main ideas.

Ruth: What helped you know when we got the right combination you were looking for in your design?

Michelle:  When we started the proofing! It was awesome to be able see the different options that Ann came up with based on our consultation. I was able to be selective and let Ann know what I liked and didn’t like. The visualization process worked. For example, I had initially wanted a die-cut leaf for the front of the invitation, but once I saw it in proofs, I realized it wasn’t right for what I wanted. As things started to narrow down to the final decision I was like that’s it!

Ruth: What is your favorite part of the invitations?

Michelle:  It’s hard to narrow it down to one thing because I like that it’s a whole package and everything works together. If I have to pick out a few favorites, I do really like the envelopes liner. I think it’s just a cute detail. I had also forgotten that we picked a textured paper for the wrap and when we got them I thought they were even better than what I remembered from the computer proof.  I like the string tied around the outside as well. It makes the invitation interactive and a fun experience for the guest. Guests want to feel like they’ve been invited to something special and I really feel like my guests got to experience that with the invitation that I sent them.

Ruth:  Have you had any feedback from your family and friends?

Michelle: Yes, A friend of mine in London said “this is the most beautiful thing that I have ever had the pleasure of receiving.” We also received a lot of comments about the RSVP. Everyone though it was fun and showed a little of our personality.

Ruth:  Did the invitation process help set the tone for any other parts of your wedding?

Michelle: It’s funny because we ended up changing our wedding completely during the time that we were working with Ann Elizabeth. We initially had a bigger event planned at LuLand Falls that included a caterer, florist and all of the more traditional elements. It started not being fun I realized my event wasn’t looking like me anymore and we cancelled all of the traditional stuff and reworked our wedding to be a really small, special ceremony with close friends and family outside and then a celebration dinner at snowbird. Once I made those changes I got excited about getting the wedding that wanted.
Going through the invitation process was part of the catalyst that helped me decide I needed to rework things. The invitation process was more relaxed and fun. I wanted everything to feel that way. The invitation helped me to define what I wanted the wedding to feel like.

 

Ruth: How was your experience working with the Ann Elizabeth team?

Michelle: Great! I really didn’t know what I wanted and I was amazed with the proofing process all the different ideas Ann came up. You guys really listened to my vague vocalizations and were able to manifest them into the perfect invitation. Even my parents and Bill had fun going through the process with me and it was fun to get their opinions about the process. Most of all I love the end product.

Ruth: Do you have any advice for any newly engaged ladies getting ready to plan their events?

Michelle: Listen to your instincts.  If you like something and it feels right build on that even if it’s vague and hazy at first. Try to be vocal with the wedding professionals helping you so they can guide you by asking the right questions to ultimately help you have the most enjoyable experience. Start building a selection of images that appeal to you. In situations where words fail, images will speak.

5 Reasons to Break Up With Photo Wedding Invitations

Today, we're breaking up with photo wedding invitations.

(GASP) No, no. Really, it's okay...

It's been a good run, but it's time to move on.

So, here's our list for why we just can't be together anymore: 

5. You're always glossy, all the time. Some variation in texture would be nice.

 

4. You're flat... one dimensional. I'm looking for more- something my guests can interact with!

 

3. You're good at showing my guests whose wedding they'll be at... but 7 different poses is overkill.

 

2. You look nice for a post card, but not for the biggest day of my life.

 

1. You can only be a 6 on the "formal" scale. I want a 10.

 

So, photo wedding invitations, we're through. Though we may see you come around every now and then, we know we've made the right move.

If you're feeling some withdrawals from the breakup, be strong! Don't turn back. Focus on the things that will be better for your invitations in the long run. Things like:

  • A clutter-free main piece. Whether your invitations are elegant or casual, it's much classier not to use a photo on your main piece. If you include a photo, do so as an enclosure. Use your lovely faces as an accessory, not the star of the show.
  • Invitations that more effectively set the tone for your wedding. We've seen it countless times; a photo wedding invitation that (by its nature) has an informal feeling to it... so the guests show up to your formal event in business casual clothing. It's embarrassing for everyone, so do your guests a favor and reflect the tone of your wedding in the invitations!

Believe it or not fall is upon us, which means it's time for all you winter brides to be getting serious about your invitations.
